Happy New Year’s Eve! I have been out for a bit and missed posting on the blog in November, as I was gone half of the month in Bali (blog post on my experience coming soon!) and I’ve spent much of December preparing for all my big plans for 2019. But I wanted to take a quick moment to reflect on a year full of lots of highs, a few lows, and a whole heck ton of adventures in between.
If 2017 was the year of the waterfall, 2018 was the year of the mountain for me. Looking over my top 9 images of the year, mountains kept creeping up as a recurrent theme. The second biggest theme was my an epic Milky Way summer. I went out chasing the Milky Way for more nights than I ever had before, and it made for some epic nights. 2018 was also the year I traveled more than I ever have in one single year before(!).
6 New National Parks, 2 New States, and 2 New Countries
Each year, I make a goal to visit a new National Park, a new US State, or a new country. This year was one for the books because I visited a whopping 6 new National Parks, 4 new states, and 2 new countries. I visited all 4 corners of the state of Oregon, finally reaching some places I’d been wanting to see for a long time, and made it out for a record number of Milky Way nights. I also finally got out to the wildflower blooms at Rainier National Park, something that had evaded me in past years due to injury.
I took a roadtrip out east and experienced the magic of the southwest for the first time in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. I spent more time in the south, visiting Congaree NP in South Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains NP in Tennessee. I also said a difficult goodbye to my grandfather this year and celebrated his memory in Glacier National Park.
In my personal life, I took a phenomenal trip to Maui with my partner, finally getting the chance to take photographs of the island and adventure with him, something we unfortunately don’t get to do often. He took me on a trip to our favorite place in Oregon a month later, got down on one knee, and proposed! It was unforgettable evening and I’ll be telling that story for decades.
The final and most monumental trip of the year was my two weeks in Bali with the Institute of Code. In November I took a chance on myself and my business and enrolled in a 10-day course on Social Media & Content Marketing (blog to come soon!). I learned more about my business and myself in 10 days than I would have ever believed. It was an indescribable time of learning, challenges, photo-taking, sunrise-chasing, and more. It will be something that will shape 2019 in a big way, and I am really excited to see where 2019 takes me.
2018 was an incredible year, but I feel that the timing and my luck was just right for large portions, and with 2019 I would like to do things more intentionally. I have big dreams for my business and my photography for next year, and
- As always, improve my photography & editing
- Take more photographs of myself (!)
- Visit 2 new National Parks, 1 new state, AND 1 new country
- Take a photography trip once every month
- Create a full timelapse film
- Increase my cinematography and videography editing skills, & post more videos
- Increase my Instagram following and blog views
- Work with my dream brands & increase my landscape photography monetization
- Collaborate with other Instagramers & bloggers
THANK YOU so much for following along on this journey. There is so much more to come next year and I am really looking forward to expanding my photographic skills, expanding my blog, getting to know you all better, and more. Cheers to all I have learned in 2018, double cheers to all of you supporting me and sending me love – here’s to 2019!
